ADR/Dubbing
"Additional Dialogue Replacement" or ADR covers most post-production sound replacement including lip-synching, dubbing, re-voicing and crowd work, or loop groups. I've been doing this all my professional life.
I started doing dubbing at Worldwide films in the nineties, working with Michael Balkan, re-voicing from German and French into English, using the band method. We did hundreds of episodes of Schwarzwald Klinik, Derrick and others now long forgotten. We also did some crazy Japanese sitcoms, which were just impossible to sync properly.
I then started working for Brendan Donison at Lyps Inc., Louis Elman and Abigail Barbier, Phoebe Scholfield and Jay Benedict at Sync or Swim, Marcella Riordan and Vanessa Baker. Brendan once flatteringly described me as 'Der Syncmeister'! I'm a versatile and inventive improviser - school history lessons, military training and languages helping me to fit into almost any style or period. The job is to provide lip-synced improvised narratives to the people in the background, be it 1930's cocktail parties, rough East End pubs, or idle Viking campfire chat. I have also given voice to most of the battles in Game of Thrones, and died a thousand times. I am a Dothraki Screamer. I've got the t-shirt.
In 2013 I spent a week in Prague re-voicing Marc Lavoine in a ten part police series, Crossing Lines. The brief was to match his voice, but make him less French, so the Americans could understand him! With the incredibly accurate ear of Dialogue Editor Paul Conway, and the Pro Tools maestros at Sound Square to make the sync perfect, I'm really chuffed with this:
Nouvelle France
I re-voiced Gerard Depardieu in the whole film. It seems the Americans couldn't understand his French accent so I was briefed to tone it down a bit.
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Three days in Munich to re-voice Chow Yung Fat for the English dub.
